KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai has responded to remarks made by Michael Kong, the special assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, regarding the alleged neglect of the Kampung Haji Baki recreational park.

Tan Kai stressed that MPP has regularly undertaken maintenance tasks, including grass cutting, for the parks under its jurisdiction, including the Kampung Haji Baki recreational park.

“Otherwise, the grass would have been tall and untidy, contrary to what is shown in the photos by Kong. Other maintenance tasks include weeding, tree trimming, and replacement of faulty lighting when needed,” he said in a statement yesterday (Apr 18).

He revealed that the Kampung Haji Baki recreational park will be affected by the road upgrading project in future.

“As such, MPP has no immediate plans to replace the dilapidated children’s playground equipment, as alternative recreational facilities will be considered after completion of the project.

“Nonetheless, MPP will coordinate with the local community of Kampung Haji Baki for maintenance and to arrange for the removal of the deteriorated children’s playground equipment.”

Tan Kai stressed the MPP has consistently and will continue to maintain all parks within its jurisdiction, including the one at Kampung Haji Baki.

Kong, during a recent visit to the public park, claimed that the children’s playground was in a dilapidated state and there was visible wear and tear on facilities such as slides and see-saws.

“As a custodian of public infrastructure, MPP holds the crucial responsibility of maintaining parks, which serve as vital spaces for fostering healthy lifestyles within our communities,” he said.
