KUCHING: 1Malaysia Sarawak Advisory Council Chairman Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum has always believed that a sound education is the key to a better life. In light of the release of this year’s UPSR results recently he had this advice to offer students from the interior of Sarawak.

“Many of you will face the challenge of leaving your family for the first time.

Yet others might already live away from home but may now need to move even farther away to further your education. I know this change can seem daunting, but I assure you, it isthe road to a better future.

“Like many of you I started living in a boarding school in Bintangor for my education since I was in Standard Five, seeing my family only on weekends. After finishing fifth form, I moved from Bintangor to further my sixth form education in Miri.

After that I went abroad to complete University and my MBA. “Although living away from home was tough I must say that was very important in building the foundation for everything I have come to achieve today.

It exposed me to a whole new way of thinking and showed me I could achieve anything I wanted to if I worked for it.

“Likewise, I would like to say to all of you; move forward with a positive attitude. Take this as a challenge that will change your lives and that of your parents in the future.

It is intimidating, but it will also open doors to opportunities you would not have access to otherwise. With that I wish you all good luck in whatever your future may hold.”
