SIBU: Local Member of Parliament, Oscar Ling Chai Yew has sprang into action by delivering fresh food supplies to the Sibu Disaster Operation Centre on Jalan Lanang here on Saturday, the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.
He personally delivered a truckload of fresh food such as vegetables, fruits, chicken wings, and rice to the centre to bring warmth and support to the 80 relief personnel.
According to him, over the past few days, they had been surviving mainly on canned food with rice, so the fresh supplies were a much-needed replenishment.
He stated that this initiative aims to provide nutritious food to the disaster relief personnel stationed at the centre, ensuring they maintain their health while assisting flood victims.
He emphasised that these personnel, consisting of Civil Defence Force (APM) members and military personnel, are the frontline heroes of the Sibu disaster relief efforts.
Whenever a disaster occurs such as floods or fires, he pointed out that they are the first to respond, providing efficient and effective assistance.
To his knowledge, he revealed that, a few days ago, one APM team member passed away due to overexertion, which he described as a tragic and unfortunate incident.

“Last year, my service centre assisted APM in repairing three vehicles — a lorry, an ambulance, and a Hilux vehicle — so that the disaster relief team would have functional transportation for their operations.
“I will soon assist in repairing another faulty Hilux for the Sibu APM, ensuring their vehicles are fully operational for rescue missions,” he stated.
“I am deeply grateful for the dedication of these disaster relief heroes, who ensure the safety of flood victims and protect their properties,” he expressed.
Ling further highlighted that APM personnel and military troops are stationed at the Sibu Disaster Operations Centre on standby at all times to respond to emergency rescue and relief missions.
According to the Sibu APM’s latest report, the worst-affected flood disaster area in central Sarawak is Selangau, followed by Kanowit, while Sibu’s flood situation remains relatively less severe.
Additionally, Ling called for public assistance for a two-month-old baby currently housed at the Sibu Disaster Shelter in Kampung Bandung, who urgently needs baby clothes and milk formula.
“Those willing to help can send donations to the MUC Shelter on Bandung Road to support the affected flood victims.
“I also urge political figures and members of the public to actively contribute essential supplies, ensuring that APM and military personnel can carry out their frontline disaster relief work without worry,” Ling added.
