MIRI: Moving Communities (MC) which was set up in 2018 here has organised over 32 programmes to achieve its vision of exemplifying togetherness and unity that consequently benefits society.

Its Patron and President, Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Datuk Wira Lorna Enan Muloon Chan said the events ranged from blood donations, beach cleaning, environment awareness campaigns, cultural and fundraising activities, to support causes that are significant and meaningful to society.

“I am very happy we are still here although we didn’t grow fast because of the Covid-19 pandemic … we are from different groups and races but come together and do things together. Kudos to the community spirit and endeavours,” she said at a Moving Communities New Year dinner on Saturday.

Among those present were her husband and former Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan, Organising Chairman, Professor Dr Beena Giridharan, and other exco members – Rita Lau (wife of Miri Mayor Adam Yii), Councillor Supang Yee and Vice President of the Federation of Orang Ulu Association Malaysia (Forum), Datuk Dr Philip Raja.

Lorna reiterated that Moving Communities exemplified what a community group could achieve when they unite and that “during the pandemic, we collaborated several times to conduct activities that benefited members of the Miri community including distributing masks and sanitisers to the public.”

Meanwhile Prof Beena said MC is the brainchild of Lorna who envisioned a community group comprising all walks of life and ethnic groups in Sarawak.

On the dinner, Beena said it was to remember the values that have brought them this far in the spirit of collaboration and engagement and hoped for a year of continued togetherness, unity and ability to contribute to the community here and across Sarawak.
