KUCHING: The National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) has been encouraged to collaborate with the Research Institute of Investment Analysts Malaysia (RIIAM) to expand community engagement efforts among businesses across Sarawak.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information, and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said such collaboration would help promote local brands to reach a broader consumer base statewide.
“Sarawak is such a vast state, with a population of just under four million. It’s a challenge for businesses to cultivate a strong culture of consumerism.
“As I observed that many MTPN programmes were concentrated in urban areas, particularly Kuching, I would like to invite MTPN to collaborate with our agencies, especially RIIAM.
“Together, we can enhance community engagement initiatives across Sarawak, including rural areas. This approach can help introduce reliable local brands, build goodwill, and foster trust among consumers,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the Consumers’ Choice Awards hosted by MTPN held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here last night (Dec 19).
Abdullah also urged brands and entrepreneurs to embrace digitalisation and adapt to the growing influence of technology in business operations.
“By now, everyone should be prepared to embrace these changes. The shift to digital platforms and the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) are inevitable. It will undeniably impact how businesses operate and how they connect with consumers,” he added.
He also encouraged Sarawakian entrepreneurs highlight the state’s unique products to tourists.
He said several major events, such as the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2027, are expected to attract a significant number of visitors.
“With this influx, local entrepreneurs must showcase products that can boost the state’s economy,” he said.
Earlier, 50 businesses were awarded the Consumers’ Choice Award 2024/2025.
Also present were MTPN Sarawak chairman Wynton Ong and National deputy president for International Policy & Strategy Masrudi Abdul Rahman.
