KUCHING: Road users should cultivate an attitude of being careful and consider the risks on the road at all times in addition to being considerate to other road users.

Sarawak Crime Prevention and Community Safety department chief SAC Wong Ing Fung said road users should always be prudent while on the road and always adjust their speed to the road conditions.

She pointed out that the speed of vehicles should be reduced when entering congested areas, crooked roads, approaching corners and any obstacles that limit the driver’s view so that they can stop their vehicle during an emergency without losing control of the vehicle.

“Drivers and riders are also advised to be vigilant and carefully observe other road users, to be able to anticipate their actions and avoid the possibility of being involved in an accident.

“Always have a second driver if it is going be a long drive because a tired body and sleepy eyes can disrupt one’s concentration and cause road accidents,” she said during the flag off ceremony of PDRM and Petronas Road Tour programme at Petronas petrol station in Matang Jaya yesterday.

Wong added that road users should plan their journey ahead and postpone it if they feel tired, sleepy, under the influence of alcohol or were in a restless state.

She also reminded road users to always abide by the speed limit set when driving, comply with all safety rules when switching lanes and use the signal indicator to turn.

“Aside from that, they should also check their side mirrors and rear-view mirrors before making dangerous movements such as switching lanes.

“Do not overtake another vehicle if hesitant because it is not only rude but it endangers other road users,” she explained.

The traffic rules at intersections should always be complied with by stopping when traffic light turns red or yellow and give priority to pedestrians.

In addition, road users are advised not to drive slowly on the right lane as it is for fast-moving vehicle and not for a slow-moving vehicle.

Wong also reminded motorists to avoid tailgating another vehicle in front because it could cause serious accidents. Motorists must keep a sufficient space from the next vehicle, in case something happens in front of them.
