SIBU: As many were busy preparing for the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations, a tragic accident struck in Upper Lanang last night (Mar 29), claiming the life of a young man after his motorcycle plunged into a drain.

Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said that the victim was identified as Nurkhaiman Abdullah, 27.

“A team of firefighters from Sibu Sentral, rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 10.37 pm.

“Upon arrival, the team found a motorcycle involved in an accident, but the victim was not at the reported location,” he said in a statement today (Mar 30).

A search was immediately launched, with personnel initially combing the drain using an open water surface search method. However, the victim was nowhere to be found.

“As the water receded during the second search, the team discovered the victim inside the drain near the accident site at 12.10 am,” he added.

The victim’s body was handed over to the police at 1.16 am for further action.
