KUCHING: More surveys need to be conducted on the relevance of establishing a handicraft centre in Kapit.
This is due to the fact that many craftsmen work from home and a total of RM182,130 has been allocated for handicraft activities in the state byKraftangan Malaysia.
Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Lee Kim Shin pointed this out during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here yesterday.
“RM120,000 was allocated to Bangi Embol in Sungai Kain, Baleh to help her in acquiring equipment to process natural dyes and another RM62,130 was given to Suzy Imbah in Nanga Entawau for a workshop and equipment to weave pua.”
Lee was responding to a question submitted by Bukit Goram State Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat during the question and answer session.
He added that Kraftangan Malaysia had also submitted a proposal to include Kapit as part of the One District One Industry (SDSI) in crafting pua at the national level.
The proposal was submitted last year and is still awaiting approval.
