KUCHING: The heirs of Nurul Asikin Lan, who was murdered last December, are now receiving monthly payments from the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO).
The monthly financial documents, along with the PERKESO Prihatin Box, were handed over by the Director of PERKESO Sarawak, Tan Phang Chia, to Nurul Asikin’s parents, Lan Endor, 53, and Nasib Kantok, 60, at their residence in Darul Hana Housing today (Jan 13).
The handover of the aid was also witnessed by the Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, and the Deputy Director of the Sarawak Welfare Department (JKM), Mohd Ali Taib.
Nancy said that PERKESO Sarawak had been proactive in obtaining information to verify the contribution status of the deceased.
“We have also cooperated to ensure that the family can be contacted and informed about this assistance.
“PERKESO has provided detailed information, including a bereavement contribution of RM3,000 for funeral arrangements, while monthly contributions of RM608 will continue until both heirs pass away,” she said when met by reporters after witnessing the handover of the monthly financing documents and PERKESO Prihatin Box.
Additionally, Nancy said the Welfare Department (JKM) continues to provide counselling support to the family of the deceased, who are still affected by Nurul Asikin’s tragedy.
“For now, we are giving the family space to calm down, as they are still experiencing trauma from the incident.
“We have not been able to speak with them yet because we don’t want to burden them. We need to observe them first, and if they are still traumatised, we will not disturb them,” she said when asked if the deceased’s family had sought counselling assistance.
Previously, the body of Nurul Asikin, 28, believed to have been murdered, was found near a drain in the Jalan Setia Raja area on December 14, 2024.
The body was discovered in an incomplete state following the arrest of a 23-year-old local man linked to Nurul Asikin’s disappearance.
The deceased had been reported missing since December 5, 2024, after her family was unable to contact her.
On December 18, police confirmed that the body found was that of Nur Asikin, based on the results of a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test.
On December 24, 2024, the suspect, Zakwan Mokhtar, an e-hailing driver, was charged in the Kuching Magistrate’s Court with the murder of Nurul Asikin.
Zakwan was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, as well as no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane if convicted.
The court has set February 10, 2025, for the case to be mentioned again, pending the full DNA and post-mortem report of the victim.
