KUCHING: A 2-km stretch of the Matang Baru Phase 2 Road (from Matang Jaya), currently under upgrading works, is expected to be operational starting next month, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
The Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development said works are progressing well and the status is currently 13 per cent ahead of schedule.
He added that the old adjacent road would subsequently be closed for repairs.
“In one month, this new road will be completed and opened to the public, while the old road will be closed for repair works,” he said during a working visit to the Matang Baru Phase 2 Road here today (Nov 28).
Uggah urged the contractor to expedite construction while expressing hope that the monsoon season would not arrive early.
“With sufficient manpower and building materials, I am confident the contractor can complete the project on schedule,” he added.
Meanwhile, Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring its timely and smooth completion.
He said he had previously informed the minister in charge about the need to prioritise the project’s completion as over 10,000 users rely on this road daily.
“Looking at the progress, I am pleased that we can at least use the new road while the old one is upgraded to match the new road’s level,” he said.
The Matang Baru Phase 2 Road project spans 4.4 kilometres, costs RM54 million, and is expected to be fully completed before 2026.
Also present was Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo.
