MIRI: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is closely monitoring concerns related to African Swine Flu (ASF) and Japanese Encephalitis (JE).

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni assured this when speaking at an appreciation ceremony for 173 Form Five students at SMK Taman Tunku, held at Eastwood Golf and Country Club here today (Dec 14).

Addressing ASF concerns, he stated that the Veterinary Department is primarily responsible for managing the outbreak.

However, he said the MOH remains committed to providing necessary guidance.

“We at the Ministry of Health Malaysia are always ready to offer advice regarding African Swine Flu.Pig breeders, and consumers purchasing pigs from unknown sources need to exercise caution,” he said.

Lukanisman also confirmed that detailed monitoring of swine flu cases in Serian is underway.

With the festive season approaching, he emphasised the importance of vigilance in purchasing pork products, reiterating that the Veterinary Department has issued reminders to ensure safety.

Regarding JE, which is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, Lukanisman said preventive measures are being taken.

“Our team is conducting vaccination tests for JE. In areas within a two-kilometre radius, we are ensuring vaccinations are carried out,” he said. “Community leaders play a vital role in maintaining cleanliness, particularly in waterlogged areas, to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. This approach mirrors the steps we take to combat dengue.”

Lukanisman added that a KKM team has been deployed to Mukah, particularly to Kampung Tanjung, where close monitoring is being conducted, after a case of JE was reported on Dec 4.

“We are taking proactive measures because this issue has the potential to escalate into an epidemic,” he warned.
