KUALA LUMPUR: Modern methods of construction (MMC) should be introduced to support and accelerate the growth of public infrastructure projects and the development of affordable housing in strategic locations, said the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC).
In a statement yesterday, the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) said that MMC should be implemented starting from the vision and design phase and continuing through the endof-life phase of construction, including pre-construction, during construction, and postconstruction.
Construction Productivity and Built Environment Nexus (COBEPN) Nexus Champion Datuk Seri Michael Yam said a graduated implementation of MMC based on a definitive roadmap should be introduced throughout the construction and built environment phases.
MPC deputy director general Zahid Ismail said that productivity in the construction sector is not just a goal but it’s a necessity for sustainable growth.
“Embracing MMC throughout the entire construction lifecycle is not only a forward-thinking approach but also a crucial step toward achieving higher productivity in the industry,” he said.
MPC said that one of COBEPN’s initiatives is the Productivity Step-Up programme, which aims to promote and encourage contractors to adopt MMC. “The programme is conducted together with technology providers that will assist construction firms in adopting technology. Additionally, the programme encourages the participants to recognise and evaluate any challenges encountered during construction activities and explore technological solutions to those challenges.
“These technologies provide innovative solutions and opportunities for reducing emissions while enhancing sustainability. They will also help reduce labour and speed up construction with better quality outcomes, which would indirectly lead to more efficient delivery of affordable housing,” it added. COBEPN is under MPC and was established under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP) as one of the government’s initiatives to boost national productivity and economic growth through collaboration between the government, industry players, and academia. – BERNAMA
