KUCHING: Three Vietnamese were arrested by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for intruding into Sarawak waters.

Sarawak MMEA senior assistant director Lt Cmdr Musli Jaffar said the arrest was made on Sunday at 5.30am.

“When we boarded the vessel for inspection, we discovered that the captain and two crew members did not have any identification documents,” he told the press here yesterday.

Musli shows the vessel which the Vietnamese used to enter Sarawak waters.

The arrest was made approximately 52.6 nautical miles off Tanjung Sirik.

“Local fishermen alerted us of foreigners in Sarawak waters last Thursday, and after acquiring the information, we sent out a search party to scout the area on Friday,” Lt Cmdr Musli said.

“We are constantly working to improve the security in the country’s waters, to ensure the safety of vessels and that they abide by the rules.”

Lt Cmdr Musli advised anyone with information on any suspicious activities in Malaysian waters to contact the maritime operations centre at 082-432 544.
