BELAGA: The body of an elderly man reported missing after failing to return home from fishing since Saturday (Apr 27), has been found afloat in Batang Rajang yesterday (Apr 30).

Awi Lahang, 56, was discovered at the banks of Batang Rajang near Rh Lat Punan Biau by members of the public around 3.10pm.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that the body was spotted about 50km from the search and rescue (SAR) control post at Uma Badeng Long Dungan jetty.

It took about 50 minutes for the team to reach the scene and retrieve the victim’s body from the river.

Following that, the body was handed over to the police for further actions and the SAR operation ended at 4.15pm.

On Saturday, Awi had gone out fishing around 10pm downstream of Batang Rajang.

After failing to return home, his family went out to search for Awi and they only found his personal belongings in the boat. This prompted the family to report the incident to the police for further assistance.
