KUALA LUMPUR: Renowned travel platform Agoda has named Miri, Sarawak, as the most budget-friendly destination in Malaysia for end-of-year holidays, with an average room rate of RM290 per night.
The announcement comes as part of Agoda’s comprehensive analysis of the cheapest holiday spots across Asia for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Miri stands out for its affordability and diverse attractions, including the iconic Niah Caves, pristine beaches, and vibrant holiday decorations, particularly at Miri Times Square.
Country director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda, Fabian Teja, mentioned the importance of budget-conscious travel during the festive season. “With affordable flights, accommodations, and experiences, travellers can enjoy their holidays without overspending, leaving more room in the budget for Christmas presents,” he said.
Meanwhile Hat Yai, Thailand, claimed the top spot as Asia’s most affordable holiday destination, with an average room rate of RM205 per night. Following closely were Surakarta (Solo), Indonesia, at RM210 per night, and Varanasi, India, at RM219 per night. Each destination offers unique cultural experiences, from vibrant markets to spiritual landmarks.
In addition to Miri, Agoda’s list highlights other value-for-money options, such as Dalat, Vietnam (RM277 per night), and Subic, the Philippines (RM384 per night).
The ranking was determined by analysing average room rates in the ten most popular cities across nine markets, using booking data from September and October 2024 for stays between December 24 and 31, 2024. Agoda’s extensive network includes over 4.5 million holiday properties, offering travellers numerous budget-friendly choices.
