MIRI: Sarawak recorded its first organ transplant surgery for the year when a kidney donation procedure was successfully performed at Miri Hospital on Wednesday.
The hospital in a Facebook post said the operation involved the organs of a 43-year-old registered organ donor, who had pledged his commitment to the cause since 2014.
His decision, honoured posthumously by his family, has now given new hope to a patient in need of a kidney transplant.
“The surgery was conducted by transplant surgeons, Aaron Goh and Kamal Raj, from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), assisted by the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) team comprising Dr Engku Emilia Engku Awang, Staff Nurse Mohammad Aliff Abdullah, and urology nurses, Siti Zulaikha Mohd Sidek and Liz Estevera Gabin.

“Dr Uma Devi Ramadass from SGH’s Organ Procurement Unit (UPOH) and Miri Hospital’s Top Team were also instrumental in ensuring the success of the operation,” the statement read.
For the record, this marks the fifth organ donation case recorded at Miri Hospital to date.
Notwithstanding, the hospital extended its deepest condolences and utmost gratitude to the donor’s wife and family, acknowledging the extraordinary courage and generosity shown during a time of grief.
“In the face of immense sorrow, the family made a selfless decision that embodies love, compassion, and the will to offer life to another,” the statement added.
Their act of kindness not only honours the donor’s wish but also serves as a powerful reminder of how organ donation can transform – and save – lives.
