MIRI: The city of Miri is expected to receive two million visitors by the end of next year.
Miri City Council’s (MCC) Standing Committee for Tourism Development chairperson Warziedea Ahmad said it is a logical expectation because currently the number of visitors to the city is increasing, after facing difficult times during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She said since the border reopened in May 1 until September, the number of visitors recorded at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex had reached 136,120 people.
“Passengers who passed through Miri Airport during the same period numbered around 283,333 people, while visitors who came by sea route (996 people) and visitors who stopped by Mulu National Park totalled 3,434 people,” she said.
Warziedea added that in order to upgrade this “tourism paradise” in the northern part of Sarawak, the government has planned and implemented various projects.
“These include working on additional flights to Miri Airport, including direct flights from abroad, as well as intensifying promotions through the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and Tourism Malaysia,” she added.
Other efforts include providing various infrastructure developments for residents and visitors, and this includes creating a double-decker bus terminal which is expected to be operational in 2023.
A number of tourism-related projects are also planned by the city council, and these include upgrading Tomb of Dato Permaisuri as an attraction, developing a pavilion in Taman Bulatan and upgrading the landscape and trails of Canada Hill and Taman India in Miri City Fan.
