KUCHING: The state government has extended Datuk Peter Minos’ term for two more years as chairman of the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
Minos who has served for seven years described helping the Public Works Department (PWD) and its contractors in solving traffic jam problems in Kota Samarahan as a challenge.
He pointed out that MPKS is duty bound to help out in solving this big problem.
“We cannot allow people to suffer any longer from the daily massive traffic jams. By November, the traffic lights at the roundabouts will be done and completed thus MPKS will be relieved and happy,” he said on Saturday (April 1).
Minos said another challenge on hand for the local council is to ensure contractors collect waste three times a week in town and twice a week in the villages.
He said MPKS will be very strict in enforcing and monitoring this matter.
“MPKS is now forced to seriously look and see how waste management can and will be improved. We are thinking of a really modern way that respects general public health and the environment.
“We are working seriously on this and we cannot compromise the public health as well as the future of the people and nature,” he said.
Minos also said the local council has a number of projects in the coming years to further improve the lives of people living in Samarahan.
Among others, he said the local council will assist in the expanding and modernising of Asajaya town and doing people-friendly projects like the one-mile boulevard of plants and flowers as well as the Desa Ilmu small lake for recreation.
“At the same time, MPKS will follow up on its new headquarters. It has been delayed for too long by other agencies. The allocation of RM55 million was already approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in 2019 for the new MPKS headquarters.
“The present MPKS headquarters is too small and it can accommodate 100 people, but we have double the staff number,” he said.
Minos said he has spoken to the 16 new councillors and MPKS staff to work together for the development and betterment of Samarahan, adding that it is crucial to be proactive.
He assured that the local council will work together with other government agencies as well as cooperate with the private sector.
“We will be very busy in the next two years and we will do our best. This is all for the good of Samarahan and its people,’’ he added.
