KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) takes a serious view of media reports regarding the increase in the retail price of chicken.
The maximum price control mechanism programme for chicken and eggs has been implemented since Feb 5.
“This mechanism is implemented to curb the sharp increase in the price of chicken and chicken eggs in the market, especially after the festive season under the Festival Maximum Price Scheme (SHHMP),” said ministry secretary-general Datuk Azman Mohd Yusof on yesterday (Oct 18).
“Based on daily price observations on Oct 15, it was found that the national average price is RM9.18/kg.
“While the average price for Peninsular Malaysia is RM9.13/kg. This means that retail chicken prices are still below the maximum control price of RM9.40/kg.”
He explained that like other commodities, the price of chicken and chicken eggs would also be affected and change in line with the movement of production input costs such as corn, grain, and soy bean meal.
He added that the government would continue to ensure that prices in each supply chain would not exceed the maximum price.
“Through Program Jualan Murah Keluarga Murah (PJMKM) which also offers lower prices of up to 20 per cent because there are additional sales subsidies to ensure prices are below the maximum control price.
“Stern action will be taken against errant traders, including under the maximum chicken and egg price determination regulation.”
