KUCHING: The Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) will support Miri Port Authority (MPA) in achieving its vision and mission to be the catalyst for economic development in the northern region of Sarawak.
Deputy Minister Datuk Majang Renggi assured this during a working visit to MPA.
“Ports play a very important role in the economic development of the region.
“This is because they serve as entry points for import and export activities,” he said during his visit on Friday (March 4).
He was briefed by MPA general manager Serawa Budol on Miri port’s operations, management and issues pertaining to the shallow access channel at the Kuala Baram river mouth.
“The government through MIPD will support and look closely into the issues, and identify measures.
“In order for the port to be competitive and able to lure investors to come to the state, the port must look for the way forward and strategise itself to be able to meet the needs of industries.
“This includes the possible extension of port capacity to enable it to handle cargo entering the state.”
