KUCHING: A guidebook on the city’s vaunted food delights that have earned it Unesco recognition was handed over to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) here Tuesday (Jan 7).
Kuching South City Council mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng described the “Intimate and Ultimate Guide of Kuching Gastronomy” as being more than a collection of recipes or a directory of eateries.
“This guidebook is a curated compendium that narrates the story of Kuching through its food, spotlighting its role in preserving the city’s culinary traditions and promoting sustainable gastronomy,” he said.
Kuching’s recognition as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy in 2021, he said, underscores the wealth of Sarawak’s culinary heritage, which reflects the harmonious coexistence of its multicultural communities.
“Food in Kuching is not just sustenance; it is a living archive of our history, traditions, and way of life,” he remarked.
The guidebook, he pointed, serves to connect local food artisans, farmers, chefs, and restaurateurs with broader markets, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and elevating Kuching’s gastronomic profile.
It also complements ongoing initiatives such as food festivals, culinary workshops, and collaborations within the Unesco Creative Cities Network.
Expressing gratitude to Motac for its support, Wee highlighted the strong partnership between the ministry and the Kuching South City Council, which has been instrumental in translating the city’s gastronomic vision into impactful programmes.
“This guidebook is a symbol of our collaboration and a resource that will further promote Malaysia as a destination offering unparalleled culinary experiences,” he said.
Wee called on all stakeholders to continue working together to position Kuching and Malaysia as global leaders in gastronomy and sustainable tourism.
“Food is more than just a necessity—it is a bridge that connects people, cultures, and generations,” he said.
Also present were Motac Secretary General Datuk Wira Roslan Tan Seri Abdul Rahman and Kuching Gastronomy Association Deputy President Datin Dona Drury Wee.
