MIRI: Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin is hoping that the Miri Hospital will be upgraded to a regional hospital.

Speaking at the opening of the Medan Hospital Miri block, Lee announced plans to propose the development of a multi-storey car park at the hospital to the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

“This is a very meaningful project, and for us in Miri, we are very proud,” Lee said, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

“The Miri Hospital has come a long way, and with the increase in facilities and specialists, it is time we take steps to register it as a regional hospital.”

Highlighting recent advancements, Lee noted that the hospital now has specialists such as oncologists, which significantly reduces the need for patients to travel to Kuching for treatment.

“We hope the Miri Hospital will officially become a regional hospital soon. Our cardiologists are also in great demand, and we are collaborating with the Borneo Medical Centre for cardiac emergency treatments,” he added.

Lee also addressed the urgent need for parking solutions at the hospital, which serves nearly 2,000 staff members.

He plans to present a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) proposal to the Deputy Minister of Health for the construction of a multi-storey car park.

Commending the flexibility of the new hospital Medan’s layout, Lee emphasised its multi-purpose design.

“The layout is not only suitable for emergencies like the Covid-19 pandemic but is adaptable for other uses as well,” he said.

The Medan Hospital Miri block is expected to enhance healthcare accessibility and services in the region, strengthening Miri’s position as a growing medical hub in Sarawak.
