MIRI: The long-awaited completion of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tudan, originally slated for completion four years ago, is set to see renewed efforts as construction is expected to resume this June.
The delay has been attributed to safety and structural issues, with the retendering process for the project scheduled for early this year.
The update was provided by Minister for Transport and Senadin assemblyman, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, during the Primary Six graduation ceremony of Sekolah Kebangsaan(SK) Tudan Jaya on Saturday.
“It has been seven years since this project started, and I have raised this issue numerous times. I regret that it remains unresolved to this day. However, I am hopeful that the retendering process and rectification works will finally allow the project to move forward,” he said.
When questioned about the delays, Lee explained that the initial construction was halted due to serious structural concerns.
“The Public Works Department (PWD) found cracks in the building, rendering some parts unsafe. Significant rectification work is required to address these issues before construction can proceed,” he stated.
Lee clarified that the project falls under the purview of the Ministry of Education, which initially awarded the contract.
“This is a ministry-led project. While SK Tudan Jaya was completed on time, SMK Tudan has remained incomplete,” he added.
Lee expressed optimism that rectification works could be completed this year, enabling the school to be operational by 2026.
“The need for this secondary school is urgent, especially as SMK Merbau and SMK Pujut are already over capacity, with nearly 3,000 and more than 2,000 students respectively,” he noted.
The delays in completing SMK Tudan have placed significant strain on existing schools in the area.
Lee highlighted that SK Tudan Jaya graduates currently have limited options, with most having to attend overcrowded schools such as SMK Merbau, SMK Pujut, or, in some cases, SMK Baru.
“SMK Tudan was planned to accommodate the growing student population, particularly from SK Tudan Jaya. Its completion is vital for the community,” he emphasised.
The Education Department has confirmed that the retendering process will commence in early 2025.
Lee urged all stakeholders to prioritise the project and ensure that the rectification works proceed without further delays.
“This issue has gone on for far too long. I sincerely hope that the necessary works will be completed promptly, so the school can finally serve its intended purpose,” he concluded.
Also present at the SK Tudan Jaya graduation day was Miri Divisional education officer, Mariam Monek.
