MIRI: Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew has expressed optimism for 2025, highlighting the state’s strong economic performance in 2024.

“Under the GPS government, Sarawak recorded unprecedented economic progress this year, with total revenue reaching RM14.2 billion,” Ting said in his New Year message.

“This historic achievement has enabled substantial reinvestment in the state’s development.”

The state’s 2025 budget, at RM15.8 billion, reflects this commitment, with greater allocation of RM10.9 billion earmarked for development projects.

“The Sarawak government, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari, continues to prioritise the well-being of its people,” said Piasau assemblyman.

“New initiatives like the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance Scheme (SKAS) will benefit over 850,000 individuals, while Sarawakian students pursuing higher education will receive an annual allowance of RM1,200.”

Existing welfare schemes, including the Newborn Incentive and the Kenyalang Gold Card, will be maintained.

Ting also mentioned Sarawak’s advancements in green energy, including hydrogen energy and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) initiatives, showcasing the state’s ambition to lead the region in sustainable development.

Focusing on Miri, Ting cited significant milestones, including PETROS’s RM2 billion investment in a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power plant, the RM300 million allocation for a new deepwater port, and the RM150 million expansion of Miri Airport.

Ting reaffirmed his commitment to securing further funding and enhancing infrastructure to ensure continued prosperity for Miri’s residents.

Sarawak’s tourism sector achieved impressive results in 2024, attracting 4 million visitors and generating RM10.19 billion in revenue.

The government aims to welcome 5 million tourists in 2025, supported by a RM174 million budget for tourism marketing and promotion.

Ting urged Sarawakians to remain united as the state pursues greater autonomy in healthcare, education, and parliamentary representation.

“We remain committed to upholding the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Inter-Governmental Committee Report, and the Cobbold Commission Report to defend Sarawak’s rights and bring further development to the state,” he added.
