NEW YORK: Meta Platforms on Friday announced that the company plans to invest between US$60 billion and US$65 billion in 2025 to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, reported German news agency (dpa).

The company joins other major US tech firms in announcing significant spending to leverage advancements in AI.

Meta plans to develop a massive data centre with a capacity of over two gigawatts, capable of spanning a significant area of Manhattan.

Chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg anticipates that Meta’s AI assistant, integrated across platforms like Facebook and Instagram, will reach over one billion users in 2025.

Meta’s projected capital expenditure of up to US$65 billion represents a substantial increase compared to its estimated spending of US$38 billion to US$40 billion in the previous year.

Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post that, “This will be a defining year for AI.” – BERNAMA-dpa
