SIBU: Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee has highlighted the critical role of media practitioners in delivering accurate information to the public.
He stated that the information shared, particularly about Sarawak’s development plans and the government’s achievements for the people, is essential in educating the public.
It enables them to learn, understand and protect Sarawak’s special constitutional rights, similar to how a landowner safeguards their property.
“We depend on media to help us to write stories on the state development and progress. When you write story about us it will never go away especially with the internet which is a huge data bank.
“50 years later, even 100 years later, people still can read your writing. They can see what we have achieved, what we have been inspired, what kind of thoughts that we put into, effort that we put into. And you are our writers there for the record.
“So, we also want our media to help us to tell good Sarawak stories, so that our people are being inspired by your story,” he said during a media appreciation dinner attended by more than 30 media practitioners here on Sunday night (Jan 12).
The Pelawan assemblyman also emphasised that the positive stories written by the media about Sarawak have helped connect the state with the global community.
“They get to know Sarawak, finally, on the world map. They know where we are never mistaken us with Sabah.
“So, we really appreciate how media help us to make a connection, to inspire us and also the rest of the world, through Sarawak stories.”
On the media appreciation dinner, Tiang said it was a chance to celebrate the dedication of media practitioners in the town who work tirelessly to deliver information to the public.
“Tonight is an opportunity to celebrate you. Not just your work, but your commitment, your creativity, your passion. I think you deserve this celebration.
“I hope you can take this time and enjoy your dinner while make some reflect on what story you have written for Sarawak, what difference you have made. Whose life you have touched over the years.
“I believe you deserve all these praises and all these appreciation for the sacrifice you have made thank you for being our voice. Thank you for being our guardians of the truth. Thank you for being the stewards of our history.”
