MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) has swiftly addressed concerns over foam, greenish water, and an unpleasant odour affecting the large pond at Bulatan Park.

Working alongside the Department of Agriculture Sarawak (DOA) Miri Division, water samples were collected on December 11 last year, leading to a detailed ecological analysis of the site.

Yesterday, Miri City mayor cum Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang visited the pond to review the findings from the water quality inspection report.

The report, based on the DOA’s investigation, highlighted key ecological challenges and provided a comprehensive assessment of the pond’s water quality.

According to the DOA’s findings, the water quality remains within acceptable levels.

However, the issues of foam, greenish water, and odour are linked to the large catfish population in the pond. The foam, the report notes is likely caused by mucus secreted by the catfish, which is then concentrated in certain areas by the paddle wheel aerator.

Additionally, uneaten fish feed has exacerbated these problems by contributing to water pollution.

The Sarawak Agriculture Department has recommended tighter control over the number of fish and aquatic species in the pond, the use of pellet-based feed only, and the regulation of feeding quantities based on the fish population.

Responding to the report, Yii underscored the significance of the artificial lake as a vital recreational and fitness venue for Miri residents.

He stressed that its ecological health directly impacts public enjoyment and the city’s image.

Yii instructed City Council officers to implement the DOA’s recommendations immediately.

“The City Council will spare no effort to ensure Bulatan Park becomes a more pleasant environment, providing citizens with a healthier and more comfortable recreational venue. At the same time, I urge the public to help protect the park’s environment and minimise disturbances to its ecosystem,” he said.

The MCC has also pledged to collaborate with relevant departments to optimise the lake’s management plan.
