KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will give full support and co-operation to all non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in organising beneficial programmes for the community.

Its mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said that events such as the International Day of Yoga brings a positive impact on the Kuching community.

“I urge other NGOs to also organise such programmes for the public, especially to the youths who are our future leaders.

“I am very proud to say that we all have gathered to embrace and share our intentions in educating the public on the importance of achieving a healthy mind and body through regular practice of yoga, wushu and meditation,” he said.

He said this while speaking at the officiating ceremony for the 10th United Nations (UN) International Day of Yoga celebration at MBKS here today (Jul 14).

Wee said the event aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practising yoga.

“Today it is practised in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

“Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice skill that originated in India. The word ‘Yoga’ derived from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness.

“People from any religion and background can practise this as it is an art to keep both the body and the mind healthy,” he added.

Thus, he said Yoga is an important aspect in life because both physical and mental health lead to a happy life.

Recognising its universal appeal, on December 11, 2014, the UN proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.

The events are also coordinated and conducted by the Brahma Kumaris in all major cities in Malaysia especially in Malacca, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur and around the world.
