KUCHING: The Malaysian Business Angel Network (MBAN) Sarawak, in partnership with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), successfully organised the inaugural ‘First Angel Series: Introduction to Angel Investing’ event.

The event on Thursday (May 25) saw a strong turnout of more than 15 high net worth individuals who shared a common passion for supporting Sarawak’s thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem.

In a statement on Friday (May 26), the event was hailed as a significant milestone in the region’s startup landscape.

It brought together aspiring angel investors and promising startups, aiming to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship in Sarawak.

Supported by SDEC, this initiative sought to catalyse the growth of innovative startups and contribute to the local economy.

MBAN chair pro-tem Datuk Patrick Liew emphasised the crucial role of angel investing in nurturing the startup ecosystem and driving economic development.

He expressed confidence in the positive impact that angel investors could make, highlighting the immense potential within Sarawak’s entrepreneurial community.

“The introduction of angel investing to Sarawak is a game-changer for our startup scene. By connecting high net worth individuals with early-stage ventures, we create a powerful synergy that fuels growth, drives innovation, and creates new opportunities.”

He further emphasised that the initiative aimed to provide not only financial support but also mentorship, guidance, and industry connections to help startups thrive in Sarawak’s vibrant ecosystem.

The event also served as a platform for promising startups in Sarawak to showcase their innovative ideas and projects. Startups had the opportunity to pitch their business concepts to potential angel investors and receive valuable feedback, paving the way for future collaborations and partnerships.

Esteemed speakers, including MBAN president Alan Lim, secretary Peter Wee, treasurer Xelia Tong, Cradle Corporate Affairs and Special Projects head Adam Ramskay, andPitchIn co-founder Kashminder Singh, shared their expertise and provided strategies for identifying promising startups, evaluating investment opportunities, and mitigating risks.
