KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has set its sights on upgrading existing markets, hawker centres and parks in 2025, to create a greener, healthier and more connected community.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, in his New Year 2025 message, urges citizens to reflect on the blessings that they have and appreciate the accomplishments that were achieved together.

“The New Year is a time of renewal and fresh beginnings, an opportunity to set new goals and dreams. Instead of dwelling on challenges from the past, let us focus on the future, moving forward with determination to find solutions and build a brighter tomorrow,” he said.

In 2024, MBKS became a proud member of the Network of Age-Friendly Cities, showcasing their commitment to creating inclusive and supportive environments for the elderly.

He added that their dedication to active and healthy ageing positions the council at the forefront of such efforts in Sarawak.

“Through the Child Friendly Cities Initiative, we have established the Kuching South Child Council that demonstrates our resolve to create a nurturing and supportive environment for our young residents.

“With our city’s strong community bonds, high living standards, and extensive network of health and social support organisations, we are well-positioned to make these strategies a success,” he said.

As part of Kuching’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, MBKS will be launching the ‘Love Your Markets’ campaign. The initiative encourages the community to support local markets and hawker centres, which are integral to Sarawak’s unique culinary heritage.

Wee added that the initiative invites the people to celebrate this vibrant heritage and contribute to its sustainability.

“The campaign will also see phased upgrades to existing markets and hawker centres to enhance their appeal and maintain their status as hubs for community interaction and culinary experiences as we prepare for our new gastronomy centre, scheduled to open in 2027.

“In line with its Green Initiative, MBKS is also upgrading existing parks like Hui Sing Recreation Park to provide better facilities, enhanced landscaping, and eco-friendly features for community use,” he said.

MBKS is also embracing smart technology, moving towards a Smart City with e-submissions for building plans, tenders and licenses, improving efficiency and transparency.

Looking ahead to 2025, Wee expressed excitement about advancing Kuching South through inclusivity, heritage, sustainability and innovation.

“These efforts will guide us towards a brighter, more prosperous future for all,” he said.
