KUCHING: Sarawak’s ambition to establish its airline is nearing fruition, with the takeover of MASwings from the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) expected to be finalised after the Lunar New Year and before Hari Raya Puasa.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the evaluation process for the takeover has been completed, and the agreement is set to be signed soon.
“With a business model tailored to Sarawak’s needs and plans to construct a modern international airport in Kuching, we aim to develop our new airline as a competitive regional carrier and position Kuching as a key aviation hub,” he said.
The Premier said this in his Chinese New Year message.
Abang Johari credited Sarawak’s progress to the collaborative efforts of the Sarawak Economic Action Council (SEAC), which brings together representatives from the public and private sectors.
He noted that this partnership has been instrumental in formulating the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
“PCDS 2030 is anchored on three foundational pillars: economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.
“I am proud to say that Sarawak has come up with a structured and concrete plan to steer the state to become a developed region with high income by 2030,” he added.
The Premier also said there is growing interest from other state governments and international stakeholders.
“They are keen to study Sarawak’s approach to economic transformation and its implementation of PCDS 2030,” said Abang Johari.
