The winner will then represent Malaysia to compete with up to 50 male models from around the world in Bangkok, Thailand, for the 23rd edition of Manhunt International Male Supermodel in May 2025.

Pageants are more than just physical attributes

Although he might not have been born perfect because he was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, he never sees it as something that can hinder his ability to strive in life.

In fact, on September 16, at the Geo Resort and Hotel in Genting Highland, Pahang, Foo Chi Hao, fondly known as Chris Foo among his friends and peers, will represent Sarawak in the 2024 Manhunt Malaysia, where he will compete against 13 other outstanding finalists from throughout the country.

For your information, the winner will then represent Malaysia to compete with up to 50 male models from around the world in Bangkok, Thailand, for the 23rd edition of Manhunt International Male Supermodel in May 2025.

‘A living advocate’
Standing at 190 centimetres tall, this eldest of two siblings said despite this being his first attempt at joining a modelling competition, he believed in himself as more than just someone who shared advocacy.

“My interest to compete was spurred in 2023 when I was specifically assigned to assist Datuk Aaron Von Jolly in organising the Miss International Sarawak at that time.

“When I entered this competition, I envisioned myself as ‘a living advocate,’ speaking to the public about how we should be able to walk on the same level as everyone else despite our perceived impairment in social values.

“Success to me is not an achievement but rather a process of growth, persistence through obstacles, learning from criticism, and being inspired by the success of others,” he stated.

Elaborating, this 27-year-old Kuchingite said while obstacles are part and parcel of life, he saw them as opportunities for growth rather than as roadblocks.

“Despite the many challenges I face in life, I constantly remember the three Ps: passion, patience, and persistence.

“As someone with Asperger’s syndrome or autism, I have always looked up to persons like Elon Musk and Tom Cruise who have achieved success in their own industries despite having the same fate.

“I am an achievement-orientated, persistent, committed, autonomous, and self-control person. I should also mention that I am a sporting being and that I am open about life.

“Perhaps I have my height to my advantage; I have always been an active person in sports, and I am totally into basketball, athletics, and swimming, and I have represented my university at university level,” said this former Tunku Putra International School’s student.

Asked about what a pageant or modelling competition meant to him, Foo, who has a degree in business administration from Sunway University, replied that a pageant in general does not define mere physical attributes.

According to him, the movement’s mission and vision, as well as its advocacy drive, are what truly opened his eyes to the various opportunities in life and the ways in which contestants can relate to, nurture, and give back to society by spreading the goodwill and convincing reasons for societal improvement.

Stating himself to be physically prepared for the upcoming competition, Foo is presently following a strict regime of physical workouts in order to reach his personal best, as the whole point of Manhunt is to find Malaysia’s and the world’s next supermodel.

“I must say that I am mentally prepared as well, as I started all preparation early, even before the selection was conducted. Strength, in my opinion, is developed throughout struggles rather than via victory.

“I am ready on all levels, mentally and physically. I must also thank my numerous sponsors — Puma by Lea Sports Centre, Cutting Edge Hair Salon, BH Clinics, Sheryl Khoo Photography, and Bunny Bimba — who are more than willing to come onboard to render their utmost support in making this dream come true.

“Yesterday is history; tomorrow is a mystery; and today is a gift of God, which is why we call it present. I am standing tall not just for myself but rather for my family, my friends, my associates and supporters, and to all who have made it happen.

“Ultimately, I am bringing the Sarawak flag with me, raising it high for the entire 2.9 million Sarawakians,” Foo pointed out.

Manhunt International
Manhunt International, the world’s first and longest-running male model competition, was founded in 1993 and has a distinguished history of excellence.

The competition gives contestants a special opportunity to show off their abilities and make connections with others by combining outdoor challenges, public presentations, and talent showcases.

Initially judged by an all-women panel, the contest evolved in 2001 to include male judges, embracing a more inclusive and balanced approach.

Manhunt International is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of unity and camaraderie, fostering a sense of brotherhood that transcends borders.

It’s more than a stage; it’s a journey that inspires contestants to embrace their individuality and build lasting connections, making it a standout event in the world of male modelling.

Dedicated to promoting fresh talent in the modelling and fashion industries, Manhunt International not only seeks exceptional male models but also nurtures contestants to be role models and exemplary citizens, inspiring younger generations.

In the meantime, as fellow Sarawakians, let us all support and pray for Foo in his upcoming competition so that he can successfully represent Sarawak and Malaysia.

Hopefully, his journey and struggles can serve as an inspiration for success for those with Asperger’s syndrome.

Jiayou, Foo!
