MIRI: The residents at Jalan Desa Bahagia here yesterday morning had to call the police and the Fire and Rescue Department for help after a 30-year-man climbed a pole and began wobbling on the power lines there.

The incident, which caused public chaos, happened at about 6am, according to a witness who wished to be identified only as Zulkifli.

Zulkifli said policemen and firemen began persuading the man to come down from his lofty perch as soon as they arrived at the scene.

“At first, the man refused to climb down and began talking nonsense. After 20 minutes of persuasion, he suddenly jumped to the ground.

“Luckily, he was not injured,” said the witness at the scene of the incident.

The 30-year-old man was later arrested by police and taken to the police station for further investigation. At press time, it is not known why the man acted the way he did.

Meanwhile,  Miri Police Chief, ACP Khoo Leng, told Bernama that the man was fortunate to escape injury. Khoo added that the man was then handed over to his brother-in-law to be brought to the Miri Hospital for an assessment.
