MIRI: An inmate on remand has escaped while he was being transferred to prison here on Friday afternoon.

Prior to the incident, the 31-year-old Indonesian man was transported in a prison vehicle when he escaped near Sepupok, Niah at 1.55pm.

Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah in confirming the incident said before the inmate escaped, he had complained of stomachache. Hence, he needed to defecate.

“However, when the vehicle’s door was unlocked for him to defecate, the inmate made a dash,” Lim said.

He added that the man was on remand and his case is still under trial.

“He was arrested under the National Parks and Natural Reserves Ordinance 1998,” said Lim.
