KUCHING: A 54-year-old man was arrested less than four hours after stealing a Toyota Hilux, here yesterday (Apr 25).
Kuching District Police in a statement said, the theft occurred at 3.47 pm yesterday, when the vehicle owner was unloading items in front of a premises at Sin Sin Park while the engine was still running.
An unknown man then entered the vehicle and drove off.
“Acting swiftly, the Sungai Maong police chief and members of the Patrol for Crime Prevention (RCJ) unit managed to detain the suspect at Jalan Rock.
“The suspect, who has a history of criminal offences, later admitted to stealing the vehicle during initial questioning,” it said in a statement today (Apr 26).
Based on information provided, police later located and seized the stolen pick up along with its key, which had been left by the roadside along the Lundu–Sematan main road.
Meanwhile, the case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, and the suspect has been remanded to assist with ongoing investigations.
Police also reminded vehicle owners to exercise caution when parking in public areas to prevent similar incidents.
