KUCHING: The Sessions Court here sentenced a local man to seven years in prison and three lashes of the cane for robbing a grocery store of RM700.

Mohammad, 30, pleaded guilty before Judge Iris Awen Jon to the charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the same Code.

Iris also ordered his sentence to commence effective today.

The robbery happened at 4.14am at a grocery store in Jalan Bazaar on July 24.

According to the case facts, Mohammad, armed with a folding saw, approached a 19-year-old worker and demanded money from the cash register.

Terrified, the worker complied and handed over RM700. Mohammad fled the scene with the cash.

A police report was filed and he was arrested the next day (July 25) at Lorong India Street along with the object suspected to be used in the incident.

Investigations confirmed Mohammad’s involvement through a lined-up identification by the complainant and CCTV footage, which showed him committing the robbery without a face mask.

DPP Norshafatihah Nor Azmi prosecuted the case, while Mohammad was unrepresented by counsel.
