SIBU: A 37-year-old man was ordered to be put behind bars for two months by the Magistrate’s Court today for stealing two pieces of ladies underwear.
When the nature of charge was read and explained to Gani Pau from Limbang, he understood the consequences of maintaining his plea of guilt.
Magistrate Romario Jonoi handed down the sentence after convicting him of the offence as charged.
The charge against Gani stated that he had committed theft of two pieces of ladies underwear at a house in Sibu Jaya on April 18 at about 12.59 am.
Thereby, he had committed an offence punishable under Section 379 of the Penal Code which upon conviction, provides for a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both.
According to the fact of case, on April 18 at about 10 am, at a house in Sibu Jaya, a 50-year-old woman (complainant) found out that hers and her family members underwear hanging on a hanger had gone missing.
Upon checking the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from her house, the complainant discovered that the incident happened on April 18 at about 12.59 am. Subsequently, she lodged a police report.
Acting on information received, on the following day at about 1 pm, a team of police proceeded and arrested the accused in the neighborhood area and seized from him the stolen items.
Gani, who was not represented by legal counsel, pleaded for leniency in passing the sentence.
