KUCHING: The Sessions Court here sentenced a local man to three years in prison for beheading a cat to threaten his mother with murder.

Jefrie Drahman, 33, pleaded guilty before Judge Musli Abdul Hamid to two charges framed under Sections 428 and 506 of the Penal Code.

For the first count, he was charged of deliberately beheading a female cat using a meat cleaver without a reasonable excuse. As for the second count, he was charged with uttering murderous threats against his 70-year-old mother.

The offences were committed at their residence in Jalan Tanjong Durian, Kampung Keranji, Bau, around 12.40 pm on May 15.

Musli sentenced Jefrie to 18 months in prison for the first charge and three years for the second charge. The court ordered both sentences to be served concurrently, effective from the date of his arrest on May 15.

According to the case facts, Jefrie beheaded his uncle’s cat in frustration over his mother urging him to find a job.

In addition, he also showed the cat’s severed head while threatening to kill his mother in a similar manner.

Fearing for her safety, the mother filed a police report for further action and investigation. It is understood that Jefrie tested positive for drugs during an initial urine screening test.

The case was investigated by Sgt Mohammad Asfia Ilias. Deputy public prosecutor Norshafatihah Nor Azmi handled the prosecution while, Jefrie was unrepresented by counsel.
