Man gets fives months in prison for threatening to kill his mother

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here on Monday (Oct 9) sentenced a man to five months in prison for threatening to kill his biological mother.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi delivered the sentence to Awang Jazli Awang Jalal, 24, who works as a catering assistant. He pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

According to the charge, he intentionally threatened to kill his 63-year-old mother at their residence in Kampung Samariang Batu at around 3.01am on June 20.

If found guilty, he could have been sentenced to up to seven years in prison, fined, or both.

According to the facts of the case, during the incident, the complainant (the mother of the accused) heard a commotion in the accused’s room.

The complainant woke up and saw the accused holding a meat cleaver, pointing it at her while uttering the words, “I want to stab you.”

A witness to the incident, the complainant’s daughter, then contacted the police, leading to the arrest of the accused at around 4.04am on the same day.

As a result of the incident, the complainant filed a report for further action.

The incident stemmed from the frequent admonishments by the complainant towards the accused, who had a history of anger issues.

The prosecution was handled by Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
