MIRI: A 28-year-old man was sentenced to three months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to stealing two electronic items from a mobile phone and camera accessories shop in Boulevard here.
Magistrate Sandy Yvette Freddy meted out the sentence against Mohammad Elffieydzull Rosli following his guilty plea during Thursday’s (Feb 20) court proceedings.
His sentence takes effect from the date of his arrest on Feb 17.
According to the case facts, the incident occurred on Feb 17 at approximately 6.40 pm when Elffieydzull was seen behaving suspiciously near the display section for pendrives in the shop.
A shop employee, who had been observing his movements, later reviewed the CCTV footage and discovered that he had taken one Lenyes 64GB SD card and one Lenyes 128GB USB pendrive.
The stolen items were concealed in Elffieydzull’s trouser pocket without any attempt to make payment.
The shop employee immediately pursued the man and sought assistance from a security guard to apprehend him.
The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at RM168.
Elffieydzull was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
In delivering the sentence, the court took into account the man’s guilty plea and other relevant factors.
