Man fined RM1,500 for assaulting acquaintance over slander

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM1,500 in default five months in prison for punching an acquaintance out of anger over alleged slander.

Rahmat, 44, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison term of up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

He was found to have punched and kicked a 42-year-old man at a house in Taman Malihah, Jalan Matang, here at around 6.05 am on March 16, 2022.

Based on the facts of the case, Rahmat confronted the victim at the house before punching and kicking him.

The incident stemmed from dissatisfaction after Rahmat learned that the victim had tarnished his reputation and spread slander about him to others.

As a result, the victim sustained minor injuries to his right shoulder and back and later lodged a police report out of fear for his safety.

Investigations confirmed that Rahmat had committed an offence of intentionally causing hurt to the victim.
