Man fined RM1,000 for possessing imitation pistol

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM1,000 in default one month in prison for possessing an imitation pistol.

Mohd Nizam Junaidi, 36, from Kampung Tabuan Ulu pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to the charge under Section 36 (1) of the Arms Act 1960, punishable under the same Section.

If convicted, he can be sentenced to prison for a term of up to one year, or a fine up to RM5,000, or both.

The offence was committed under the Kenyalang flyover, Jalan Tun Jugah at around 4.05 pm on Jan 6.

According to the case facts, a police team arrested Nizam during ‘Op Kesan’ following an eight-second viral video clip on social media showing the man riding a bicycle while holding an object resembling a pistol on Jalan Tun Jugah.

Nizam was taken to the police station for further investigation and action. His belongings, such as a wallet, ATM card, student discount card, debit card, a bicycle and an imitation pistol, were seized.

Investigations revealed that the man admitted to possessing the toy pistol and had no intention of committing any crime.
