KUCHING: A foreigner’s failed attempt in stealing a motorcycle yesterday (Apr 23), resulted in him being swiftly caught by members of the public.

The citizen’s arrest, which took place at a supermarket in Tabuan Jaya, had gone viral after a 13-second video clip was uploaded on social media.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that the 40-year-old suspect has been handed over to police for further action.

“Initial investigation, through CCTV checks, revealed that the suspect had damaged the motorcycle by picking the key hole, in front of a hotel on Jalan Setia Raja.

“He failed to make off with the motorcycle and fled towards a nearby supermarket. However, his escape was short-lived as the motorcycle owner managed to track him down,” he said.

The suspect later admitted his involvement in the case during questioning.

Alexson added that the suspect, who tested negative for drugs, did not have any valid travel documents to enter Malaysia.

The case is being investigated under Section 379/511 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
