MIRI: Mercure Miri City Centre has become the first hotel in Malaysia to receive the prestigious Green Key certification.
The certification, awarded to establishments demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, puts the hotel at the forefront of sustainability efforts in Malaysia.
General Manager Shan Ravendran said it also aligned with Sarawak’s vision for a greener, eco-conscious future.
“It is an honour to be part of a team of like-minded individuals driving sustainable change across the industry, local community, and among our fellow Heartist colleagues,” said Shan, referring to employees of Accor hotels.
“Being the first hotel in Malaysia to achieve Green Key certification is a milestone we set out to achieve. We will continue supporting Accor’s and Sarawak’s green initiatives.”
Shan credited the certification to his team’s dedication, collaborative efforts, and steadfast commitment to embedding sustainability into every aspect of hotel operations.
“Achieving the Green Key certification required extensive preparation and adherence to rigorous environmental standards. This proves Mercure Miri City Centre is more than just a hotel—it is a beacon of sustainable hospitality in Malaysia,” he said.
Shan highlighted the hotel’s green efforts, which include solar-powered lighting, water-saving devices, and optimised energy usage in non-essential areas.
These initiatives have significantly reduced electricity, water, and gas consumption.
“The hotel’s design also incorporates an advanced wastewater treatment system, ensuring compliance with stringent environmental standards to safeguard Miri’s natural resources,” he said.
The hotel offers eco-friendly features such as electric scooters for guests to explore Miri with minimal environmental impact.
Guests also receive information to help them make environmentally conscious choices during their stay.
Mercure Miri City Centre is more than an eco-friendly establishment; it serves as a gateway to Miri’s natural and cultural wonders, said Shan.
“Through locally sourced materials, eco-tourism recommendations, and designs inspired by Sarawak’s flora and fauna, our team encourages guests to connect with the region’s unique biodiversity and cultural heritage,” he said.
Sustainability also guides the hotel’s purchasing decisions, ensuring selected products and services contribute to a lower carbon footprint.
“By working with local stakeholders, we strive to reduce collective carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices across Miri and beyond,” he added.
