BEIJING: China has introduced new measures to simplify the marriage registration process and reduce financial burdens on couples as part of efforts to increase births.
The changes allow couples to register their marriages locally, eliminating the need to travel to their registered hometowns, which had previously created logistical and financial challenges.
This reform targets younger generations, especially those working or living far from their hometowns. In addition to cash incentives and childcare infrastructure investments, the government is tackling high “bride prices” and extravagant wedding costs, which can strain families financially. With a third consecutive year of population decline and a 20 per cent drop in marriages, the Ministry of Civil Affairs is also working to curb harmful customs that discourage marriage and childbearing, such as the high financial demands of traditional weddings. Rising costs, including housing and education, remain major obstacles for young couples. The new policy is expected to be implemented nationwide following successful pilot projects. – AFP
