BINTULU: A driver managed to escape unscathed after his BMW X5 suddenly burst into flames along the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) route, Jalan Pan Borneo last night (Apr 27).
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Samalaju station were dispatched to the scene, about 44 km away, following an emergency call at 9.51 pm.
Upon arrival, they found the mid-size luxury crossover sports utility vehicle (SUV) engulfed in flames by the roadside and its driver managed to evacuate to safety.
Firefighters carried out the extinguishing efforts using water sourced from their fire engine.
At around 10.30 pm, the flames were brought under control and overhaul works followed suit to ensure that there is no risk of reignition.
The team ended the operation at 11.06 pm.
