LUNDU: Residents here are on high alert following continuous rain since yesterday evening (Feb 4).

District police said the heavy downpour has led to localised flooding in several areas.

The authorities are however closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of residents.

The rainfall, which started around 11pm on Feb 4 and continued through to 4pm on Feb 5 , has been compounded by tidal surges and overflowing mountain streams, said police in a report.

“These conditions have resulted in flash flooding in multiple low-lying areas of the district. However, the water level in the Batang Kayan River remains at a safe and manageable level, providing some reassurance to the affected communities.”

Floodwaters have impacted various villages including Kampung Selampit, Kampung Sileng Melayu/Dayak, Kampung Bitokan, Kampung Seketi, Kampung Semunin Cina, Kampung Pulo Air, Kampung Senibong, and areas surrounding Pekan Lundu.

But no temporary evacuation centres have opened as the floodwaters are not at a level requiring such measures.

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, follow official warnings, and report any rising waters to the authorities promptly.
