KUCHING: A total of 5,000 motorcyclists join the Gawai Raya 2019 celebration at the Old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) yesterday.
Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the programme which saw the gathering of youth is a major change for the state.
“When I was a kid, I was not allowed to ride a motorcycle because it was considered dangerous and my family did not want me to be involved in any untoward incident.
“The young generation is now very fortunate to have the freedom to ride do any activities easily,” he said during the event.
He added youths who love riding motorcycles should use their skill well so that they can benefit from it.
“Now, riding a motorcycle is a new phenomenon, especially for the people living far from the city, as it facilitates their movement from one place to another.
“And motorcyclists should maintain and practise safety on the road,” he stressed.
He also hoped there would be more motorcycle associations in the future.
The event was organised by Sarawak Motorcycle Association (SAMA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture Youth and Sports.
During the event, 20 orphans from Asajaya district received ‘duit raya’ from Taib and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib.
