MIRI: A 17-tonne lorry transporting oil palm was engulfed in flames while travelling from the Imbuk Suai Plantation to Kuala Baram on Tuesday (Jan 7).

The incident occurred at 12.01pm along Jalan Pan Borneo, on the stretch between Bintulu and Miri, near Simpang Ngu.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s (Bomba) operations centre, firefighters from the Batu Niah Bomba were immediately dispatched to the scene following an emergency call.

Fortunately, the 49-year-old driver of the lorry escaped unharmed. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by 12.25pm and fully extinguished it by 1.20pm.

Initial assessments indicate the lorry was approximately 40 per cent destroyed by the fire.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
