Longhouse succeeds in extinguishing kitchen fire

BELAGA: A total of 10 fire extinguishers were used by Kahei longhouse residents to swiftly put out an evening fire and save their longhouse from being burned down on Friday (Dec 9).

The incident which happened around 7.03 pm, had only caused five per cent damages to one pintu (door) from the 14-door longhouse.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Belaga station were despatched to the scene after receiving a distressed call.

Upon arrival, the team confirmed that the fire occurred in the kitchen of the room number eight and it had spread to the ceiling and walls of the kitchen area.

However, the flames were promptly handled and extinguished by the longhouse residents with 10 fire extinguishers.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident as the room was uninhabited.

The team performed overhaul works to ensure that the fire was completely put out before wrapping up the operation and head back to their station.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
